Let's talk about one of the most eye-catching printing methods in the game right now: sublimation. If you've ever seen a jersey with a full-panel design that looks like it was painted directly onto the fabric, or a shirt with a photo-realistic image that goes edge to edge without a single crease or crack — that's sublimation. And we do it right here in-house at BD Shirts in St. Joseph, MO.
So What Exactly Is Sublimation Printing?
Great question. Unlike DTF or screen printing, where the ink sits on top of the fabric, sublimation printing uses heat to literally turn ink into a gas that bonds with the fibers of the material. The result? The design becomes part of the fabric itself. It won't peel, crack, fade, or feel like a sticker on your shirt. It's smooth, vibrant, and incredibly durable — even after a hundred washes.
What Makes It Different from DTF or Screen Printing?
Screen printing puts thick ink layers on top of the fabric. Great for bold, simple designs. Not ideal for photo-realistic prints or gradients.
DTF (Direct to Film) transfers also sit on top of the fabric, but they're super versatile and work on almost any material, light or dark.
Sublimation goes INTO the fabric. It's permanent, seamless, and perfect for full-color, all-over prints — but it works best on polyester or poly-blend fabrics in light colors.
Each method has its place, and at BD Shirts, we offer all of them. But when you need bold, all-over, full-color, edge-to-edge design? Sublimation is your best friend.
What's Sublimation Perfect For?
Sports jerseys and performance wear — the design breathes with the fabric and doesn't weigh it down
Photography and art shirts — photo-realistic images with rich color and smooth gradients
All-over print apparel — designs that wrap around the sides, sleeves, and back with no borders
Event shirts and team gear — make every person in the group stand out
Creative custom projects — anything where you want the design to be a total statement piece
Why In-House Makes All the Difference
Here's the thing — sublimation done right requires precision. Temperature, pressure, timing, and color profiles all have to be dialed in. When you outsource to a third party (or order from some overseas shop), you lose control of all of that. At BD Shirts, we handle everything in-house, right here in St. Joseph, MO. That means:
Faster turnaround — no waiting on middlemen or overseas shipping
Better quality control — we check every print before it goes out the door
Real communication — talk to an actual person (hi, that's us) who knows your project
20+ years of experience — we've been doing custom apparel long enough to know how to get it right the first time
Sports Teams, Photographers, and Creative Minds — This One's for You
If you're coaching a travel baseball team and want uniforms that actually look as good as the kids play — sublimation is the move. If you're a photographer who wants to turn your best shot into a wearable piece of art — sublimation does that. If you're planning a themed event and want shirts that make people say "where did you get that?" — you know where this is going.
We work with individuals, teams, businesses, and events of all sizes. There's no project too wild or too small. The P.A.N.D.A. program is built on that spirit — if you've got a vision, we'll help you bring it to life.
