DTF printing — direct-to-film — has changed the custom apparel industry. It's how we produce the majority of our custom prints at Bright Designs, and it's why we can offer full-color prints with no minimums and no setup fees. Here's how it works and why it matters for your order.
What Is DTF Printing?
DTF stands for Direct-to-Film. The process works in four steps: your design is printed onto a special film using water-based inks, a hot-melt adhesive powder is applied while the ink is still wet, the powder is cured with heat, and the finished transfer is then heat-pressed onto your garment. The result is a full-color, durable print that bonds directly into the fabric fibers.
Why DTF Beats Screen Printing for Most Orders
No setup fees or screen charges — screen printing requires a separate screen for every color in your design, which adds cost before a single shirt is printed. DTF has none of that.
Unlimited colors — gradients, photographic detail, complex logos all print the same as a simple one-color design.
No minimums — because there are no screens to set up, a single shirt costs the same to produce as the first shirt in a bulk run.
Works on almost any fabric — cotton, polyester, blends, nylon, and more.
Soft feel — modern DTF prints lay flat against the fabric and feel softer than traditional plastisol screen prints.
What Are Gang Sheets?
A gang sheet is a single film sheet with multiple designs or copies of a design printed together to maximize efficiency. Instead of printing one design on its own, we nest designs side by side on a full sheet to reduce waste and lower the cost per print. This is how we keep pricing competitive even on small orders. Wholesale DTF customers can order gang sheets directly from us at $0.40 per linear inch.
DTF vs. Sublimation vs. Embroidery — Which Do You Need?
DTF is the right choice for most custom apparel orders — especially full-color prints, logos with multiple colors, and orders without minimums. Sublimation is better suited for all-over prints and performance wear. Embroidery is ideal for polos, hats, jackets, and anything where a raised, stitched look adds professionalism. Not sure which one you need? That's our job to figure out with you.
We Do It All In House
At Bright Designs, our DTF production is fully in house. We print the transfers, cure the powder, and press the finished product — nothing is outsourced. That means faster turnaround, full quality control, and no middlemen driving up your cost. We also sell wholesale DTF transfers to other decorators and home printers. If you need transfers only, we can produce gang sheets to your specs.
