DTF transfers have made professional-quality custom apparel accessible to home decorators and small shops. You don't need a full print setup — just a heat press and good transfers. Here's how to get great results every time.
What You Need
A heat press — a clamshell, swing-away, or draw press all work. Even an iron in a pinch, though a heat press gives far better results.
Your garment — pre-pressed to remove moisture and wrinkles before applying the transfer
Your DTF transfer — ordered from Bright Designs or printed on your own equipment
A cover sheet or Teflon sheet for the finishing press
Step-by-Step Application
Pre-press your garment for 3 to 5 seconds to remove moisture and wrinkles.
Position your transfer film-side up on the garment where you want the design.
Press at 300 to 320 degrees Fahrenheit for 10 to 15 seconds with medium to firm pressure.
Peel the film. Most transfers are warm peel — peel slowly while still warm. Some are cold peel — let it cool completely first. Check with your transfer supplier if you're unsure.
Final press — place a cover sheet over the design and press again for 5 to 10 seconds. This seals the transfer and gives it a smoother finish.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
Too much pressure — can flatten the transfer and cause cracking over time
Not pre-pressing — moisture in the garment causes adhesion issues
Peeling too fast — can pull parts of the design off with the film
Skipping the final press — reduces durability and wash performance
