One of the most common questions we get at Bright Designs is: what's the difference between DTF, sublimation, and embroidery? The honest answer is that the right method depends on your garment, your design, and how the finished product will be used. Here's a plain-language breakdown.
DTF — Direct-to-Film Printing
DTF is our most versatile print method. A design is printed onto a special film, adhesive powder is applied, and the transfer is heat-pressed onto the garment. It works on virtually any fabric, supports unlimited colors with no setup fees, and is ideal for single items or large runs alike.
Best for: t-shirts, hoodies, bags, hats, and most everyday custom apparel. Any full-color logo, graphic, or design with fine detail.
Sublimation Printing
Sublimation uses heat to convert ink directly into gas, which permanently bonds into the fabric fibers rather than sitting on top. The result is a print that won't crack, peel, or fade. Sublimation works best on polyester or polyester-blend fabrics and white or light-colored garments. It's the go-to method for all-over prints, performance wear, and specialty items.
Best for: all-over prints, jerseys, performance wear, custom tablecloths, pop-up tents, and large format items. We produce large format sublimation in house.
Embroidery
Embroidery stitches your design directly into the fabric using thread. It adds texture, dimension, and a premium feel that print methods can't replicate. Every embroidery job requires digitizing — converting your artwork into a stitch file — which we do in house. That means full quality control and no outsourcing delays.
Best for: polos, hats, jackets, bags, and any application where a professional, upscale look matters. Corporate apparel, uniforms, and branded workwear.
